June

What a busy month! Where to start?

Hazel is six weeks old. Iris is just shy of two and a half. We've had some lovely family trips lately and lots of friends and family to help us get through these early weeks of sleep deprivation. We really appreciate all the help!

New photos and video up on flickr here. We've had visits from Aunt Alison, Grandma Kathryn and JJ & D-Dad (the Joneses) recently. Next weekend we're headed to Boston to stay with the Eckelman-Brouhards and visit with the McKeon-Joneses and our friends the Ippolitos over July 4th weekend. This will be our first overnight out of New Haven with Hazel.

This past Saturday was the last day of New Haven's wonderful Arts & Ideas festival, which features many free concerts on the city Green (there are some photos of the last concert; we want to a number, including Natalie McMaster). The last two weeks have featured numerous picnics on the green listening to fabulous music and keeping Iris up past her bedtime.

We've also been having a great time hanging out in our backyard and our neighbors' backyards in the nice weather and long evenings. We hosted our first potluck of the season recently and loved having a dozen neighborhood kids playing together and entertaining themselves! (never mind that they accomplished this by throwing mud all over the place and all required baths at the end of the night.)

On Sunday, we went on a day trip to Essex, half an hour east of here, where we boarded a steam train and took a boat down the Connecticut river. Suffice it to say, Iris was beside herself with excitement with the chance to ride a real choo-choo train. What a good time!

Iris and Hazel are getting along. Hazel, as you see from the photos, is chubbing up quite nicely. She is no longer a newborn, but a real baby! Iris adores her and frequently asks to hold "her baby." Other than gaining weight, Hazel doesn't do much. Her major accomplishment of late is learning to smile! She started around five weeks, but I finally got it on film last week (see below). It is wonderful! There's nothing like your baby's first smiles to melt our your heart. Now, if only she would sleep in longer intervals at night . . . .

Iris continues to learn at an amazing pace. She repeats everything we say these days (we have to really watch what we're saying!) and picks up new vocabulary, sentence structure, and concepts daily. It's amazing to observe and participate in. She is developing physically as well, becoming very confident on the play-ground, running, jumping, climbing, you name it.

Smiling!
