August

I'm a bit behind in updating the blog, so a few trips, updates and photos from July and August.

We had a lovely trip down to Roanoke VA to visit David and Phyllis Eckelman at the end of July. Photos here. Grandpa John accompanied us, which was a great help and we got to catch up with Carol and Bob as well.

August photos here.

We got out to Western MA to visit with Grandma Kathryn and visit friends Nick and Anya, and their sons Isaiah (great friend of Iris's from New Haven) and Samuel (quite new to the world!). While in the area, we stopped at Atkins for cider donuts and finally made it to the Eric Carle museum, which was a hit with the girls.

We also had a wonderful visit from cousins Tracey and Eelco and their sons Quintus and Siebo. Adventures with the extended Denton clan included a trip to the Science Museum, the splash park near the McKeon-Joneses and lots of shenanigans with the six! kids (they're all second-cousins).

Hazel recently had her 15 month doctor's appointment. She is doing great - evening out - now 75th percentile for height and weight. She now walks competently - quickly even, getting better at turns, and currently practicing going up and down small steps. She's getting faster and harder to keep track of . . . We'd say she has about three words: uh-oh, mo (more) and da-da. Although she can't say much, her comprehension has sky-rocketed in recent weeks. She now understands a lot of what we're saying and can actually understand and follow verbal instructions. For example "go get your shoes" or "show this to Daddy." Of course, this development also means that she now has stronger opinions of her own and sticks to her guns. If she doesn't like something we give her to eat, she'll throw it on the floor and pound her high-chair tray. Lovely. She has settled into the schedule at day-care and seems to be enjoying herself there - she no longer cries at drop-off and is often resistant to leaving at pick-up.

Iris is also doing great at her pre-school. We have so many interesting, funny, and bizarre conversations with her. I wish I were better at writing them down. At some point she learned that there used to be no cars. Talking with her about this is a window into her brain. I tried to explain that this was a time before we were born - a time when our great-grandparents were around. She simply can not understand a time when she didn't exist. She asked if she was in my belly, and then when I said no, she wasn't anywhere, she said with certainty that she had to be somewhere.
