New Photos

Hi folks - I've got some recent photos and video up on flickr here.

We've been enjoying lots of time outdoors, especially exploring the Arnold Arboretum, which is only a few minutes away. With the spring blossoms, it has been very beautiful.

In baby news, Hazel got her seventh tooth, and is clearly working on a few more. We had to install a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, as she is currently obsessed with going up stairs. She hasn't learned to go down them safely, though. She does not like the gate and cries whenever we shut it. She has added a number of consonants to her repertoire, including, to my delight, "ma-ma" (although she seems to use it when she wants more food, not in relation to me). Hard to believe, but she will turn 1 in a week.

As for Iris, she is starting to get interested in writing letters. She is quite proficient now at identifying the letters in the alphabet (although C and G and E and F often get mixed up), and is okay at the letters' sounds. She hasn't had the dexterity to make controlled drawings, but as she is developing that skill, she's trying to make letters. Her best letter, no surprise, is I (lucky for her there are two in her name!).

Yesterday we went to nearby Forest Hills Cemetary for the first time - a beautifully landscaped place that was fun to wander around. We split our time between reading the names on the gravestones and discussing death! A topic I wasn't particularly keen to get into, but was hard to avoid given our location. Oh, the joys of existential conversation with a three year old! After quite a few questions, she got the idea that when people die, other people (this part was at first confusing to her) bury them in the ground. As to the question "what do they do when they get dead?" I had little to offer . . . I decided to save cremation for another day . . .
